As a school leader, you’re used to pushing through the term. Balancing responsibilities, firefighting problems, supporting your team, and keeping everything running. But then the holidays arrive, and instead of enjoying a well-earned break, you crash.
Sound familiar?
Many school leaders report feeling completely drained, falling ill, or struggling to relax during the holidays. This isn’t a coincidence, it’s the result of prolonged stress. When the adrenaline finally drops, your body and mind can no longer keep going, and you hit what I call ZONE D.
Welcome to ZONE D: The Danger Zone of Exhaustion
ZONE D is where your body and brain shut down after weeks or months of sustained stress. It’s the point at which your system says: “That’s enough.”
You may have experienced it yourself:
- 😴 Waking up on the first day of the break utterly drained
- 💤 Spending the first few days in recovery mode, not rest
- 🤒 Falling ill at the start of every holiday, even if you felt fine during term
This isn’t just bad luck or poor timing, it’s your body responding to accumulated stress.
The truth is, we are not designed to function in survival mode indefinitely. Living off caffeine, adrenaline, and sheer willpower might get you through a term, but it comes at a cost.
And the cost isn’t just your health: studies show that prolonged stress makes leaders up to three times less effective in their roles. It affects decision-making, relationships, and overall leadership presence.
Breaking the Cycle: Understanding the 4 Stress Zones
The good news? You don’t have to keep repeating this pattern every term.
In my work with school leaders, we’ve identified four key zones that describe the emotional and physical roller coaster of a school term. Recognising which zone you’re in can help you take proactive steps before you reach burnout.
When you understand how your energy levels shift during the term, you can:
- Spot the signs of overload earlier
- Take small, targeted actions to preserve your energy
- Recover more effectively during the holidays
- Show up for your school, your family, and yourself, with more clarity and calm

It’s not just you
This pattern is incredibly common among headteachers, senior leaders, teachers, and even pupils. The cycle of stress and exhaustion is baked into school culture, but it doesn’t have to be this way.
By learning to manage your own energy, you not only protect your wellbeing, you lead by example. You model a healthier way to navigate the demands of school life for your team and your pupils.
